JOSHUA AND BUDDY
AUTISM ASSISTANCE DOG
WASHINGTON, 2006

Yesterday evening I went to the grocery store with both my boys and Buddy. I had Josh tethered, and as has been the case since we came home with Buddy, he was quite happy to be walking around on his own - despite being limited by the length of the tether. We were leaving the store, so I had the groceries in one hand and Buddy's leash in the other, Josh was walking next to Buddy and Zach was on the other side of Josh. We were getting to the curb right in front of the store at the cross walk, where Zach, Buddy and I all stopped to check before crossing the road. Usually Josh is pretty good about stopping with us - this time, however, he decided that he was going to take off just as a car was coming. Buddy the Wonder Zebra held his ground like a rock and Josh only made it the 24 inches that the tether would allow, not into the path of the on-coming car. Thank god. If this had happened 3 months ago, Josh would have pulled his hand out of mine and taken off in an instant right into the middle of the road, and the car would have hit him.     People ask me all the time what Buddy does for Josh. "Saves his life" is a pretty good answer.     Sarah

IAN AND RASCAL
AUTISM ASSISTANCE DOG
OHIO, 2006

We went to Germany for two months this year and without Rascal I don't think I would have been able to take the boys by myself. Although it was his first plane trip (and a long one at that), he was very calm and led Ian through the airports exceptionally well. He patiently endured being searched by security, sat with Ian so I could retrieve luggage, etc. He made lots of friends in Germany and helped educate many people about what he could do for Ian. We continue to do obedience training daily, it has become part of our routine for all of us. He is an excellent search dog and has amazed several of my friends and relatives when we took them out with us to practice. We all love Rascal and is a wonderful addition to our family. It is so reassuring to know he is there to help with Ian. We couldn't imagine life without this sweet, gentle soul in our family.

AUTISM ASSISTANCE DOG

2006
Well Snoopy finally made it to the bed! For all those that don't know us, Charlie has never allowed Snoopy to sleep in his bed with him; that is until Sunday night when he wasn't feeling well. He asked to go to bed at 630PM on Sunday night complaining that his throat hurt, so I put him to bed and put Snoopy on his bed. He complained that she was not in her kennel but didn't push the issue or put her in himself. Then again last night she jumped right to the bed and he said again to put her in her kennel and I said No, Snoopy is going to sleep with you again, it made her so happy and you slept well too. Not another word and he was quiet from then on (usually he is in bed for about 1 hr laughing, talking, singing, etc.). This morning he woke up happy and awake for the first time in about a month. Tonight we went to Cici's pizza after swimming lessons (without Snoopy) and what a difference. He was soooooooo wired and couldn't sit still for more than a couple minutes at a time. Normally he will stay put (when Snoopy is under the table). Long story short, we came home and Charlie was seeking out Snoopy. When it was time to go to bed, Snoopy jumped up on his bed and laid down, Charlie then crawled on top of her and looked at me and said "Can I sleep with her?" I about burst into tears! It has taken a whole year to get Charlie to let Snoopy sleep with him and we finally did it!!!!!! There bond has just exploded all of a sudden! It is soooo awesome to see! Hope everyone is doing well and having a good week! Nikki

DREW AND DIXIE
AUTISM ASSISTANCE DOG
WISCONSIN
2006

We have had another wonderful year with Dixie. She continues to be an extremely affectionate and attentive dog. Drew and she have really developed quite a relationship. He interacts with her on a regular basis, and enjoys playing games and fetch with her and at a more extensive level and for a longer period of time with a little bit of guidance from an adult. He has also begun to give her simple commands like "Dixie Come" and "Dixie Drop" to name a few. The emotional bond between the two of them has been very neat to watch as it has grown over time. Dixie continues to sleep with Drew in his bedroom on the floor.

With Drew's increased interaction with Dixie and his increased communication and participation, also came his increased ability to try and control the things that Dixie puts in her mouth and carries around. When something ends up in Dixie's mouth, Drew will normally follow her and then grab her tail while telling her no and then proceed to her mouth and take it out of her mouth, sometimes by opening her mouth with his hands and taking it out. Dixie's behavior during this continues to be just to let Drew take the item out of her mouth, her normal demeanor of being very passive continues to amaze but not surprise me. She has always had such a good demeanor and her behavior is exactly what you would expect in a service dog!

 From Drew's Therapist

Dixie is a great friend for Drew. During therapy sessions, Drew loves to play with Dixie. Drew calls her and gives her instructions which I believe helps build his assertive communication skills. We have practiced a search and rescue during therapy and Dixie performed superbly. I haven't had the chance to see Dixie is a public setting but the family takes her places frequently: soccer games, road trips, and the store. There is bo doubt in my mind that Dixie is ready for another year of outstanding service!

Alex Sarkine and Skeeter
Seizure Assistance Dog
Indiana
This dog is the most amazing guy. Alex has smiled more since he came into her life then i have seen her smile in a long time. I know you are of course aware of her epilepsy but also two years ago she lost her grandmother who was her best friend to cancer. And right before her grandmother died is when the epilepsy started. So in two years she has been through a lot. Anyhow she has smiled more because of Skeeter then I have seen her smile in two years. She used to say she would never have a best friend again after losing grandma, but now she smiles and says she has a new best friend named Skeeter.         Skeeter is able to alert the family to Alex's oncoming seizures.

Sara and Icie share a strong bond which has enabled Sara the opportunities for growth and socialization. Icie's presence assisted Sara in becoming more vocal and expressive. Icie's influence has expedited Sara's achievement in reaching mile stones which may otherwise have taken years. Icie is a happy, well cared for, obedient canine. Icie loves to travel with the family and is always friendly. She follows both Andrea and Sara's demands regardless of the environment. Icie is a great service dog!  Friend of the family
